UK Sales of Android Phones Triple

Sales of Android phones in the UK grew by a staggering 350 per cent since the beginning of 2010 despite the contract market growing by less than 1 per cent in the same period, according to GfK Retail and Technology in the UK.

The retail watcher released figures showing Android’s share of the UK mobile contract market grew from 3 per cent in the first quarter this year to reach 13.2 per cent in the second quarter.
Phones with an advanced Operating System (OS) continued to grow in the contract market, reaching 66.7 per cent in the second quarter of this year compared to 55 per cent in the first quarter.
“The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name,” commented GfK analyst Megan Baldock. “Operating Systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right.”
Growth has been continuous since the beginning of the year and is expected to rise consistently throughout 2010. The latest figures show that mobile phones with advanced operating systems represent 73.5 per cent of the UK contract market.
